LEO Satellite PTFE Coated Fabrics and Thermal Materials

High performance PTFE coated fiberglass solutions for solar arrays, radomes and thermal insulation in low earth orbit

LEO Satellite Components & PTFE Coated Fabrics

LEO satellite in orbit using Taconic PTFE coated fiberglass fabric components

PTFE coated fiberglass fabrics engineered for LEO satellite constellations

Taconic PTFE coated fiberglass fabrics are durable, high performance materials well suited for modern satellite applications, including large scale LEO constellations. Taconic has demonstrated its ability to engineer and manufacture cost effective solutions that meet strict aerospace requirements for mechanical strength, weight, and thermal stability.

Our PTFE fabrics can be produced in single ply or multi ply constructions for enhanced strength, are available in a variety of colors and can be tailored to meet specific CTE and thermal conductivity requirements. These capabilities help satellite designers optimize performance in demanding LEO environments.

Where Taconic PTFE fabrics are used in LEO satellites

Solar array structural back sheets

Taconic PTFE fabrics can be engineered specifically for solar array back sheet applications on LEO satellites, providing a stable, durable and low outgassing substrate.

  • Bondable surface to solar cell encapsulant and composite layers
  • Materials can be made conductive where required
  • Bi facial coating types available for design flexibility
  • Thicknesses starting as low as 2 mils for weight sensitive structures

Tension straps and restraint components

Taconic PTFE fabrics can be precision CNC cut and fabricated into tension straps and other restraint components. These parts can incorporate mechanical fixturing such as grommets or can be sewn using NASA recommended thread depending on your application needs, supporting consistent deployment and structural performance in orbit.

Fabrics for radomes and thermal insulation

Taconic Raycover PTFE coated glass fabric is offered as pre cut radomes in diameters up to 15 ft (5 m), providing environmental protection with minimal impact on antenna signal performance. These radomes help shield sensitive payloads from harsh LEO conditions while maintaining RF transparency.

Taconic TefShield high performance PTFE insulation fabrics are designed to control heat gain and loss due to thermal or chemical exposure in a wide range of applications. TefShield is suitable for LEO environments where thermal cycling, radiation and vacuum must be carefully managed.
